Spelling Activities

  • Read the directions for each assignment.  

  • Complete it on your own using your spelling words for the week.  

  • Write in cursive and always do your best work!

Activity 1

Write your words in alphabetical order.

Example:  defend
                  degree
                depart
               defog

Activity 2

Copy your spelling words 3 times each. 

Box any parts of your word that you think might be tricky to spell.

Activity 3-

Chart your words according to their vowel sounds.

Some words may belong in more than one column.

Some words may belong in none of the columns and these words should go under the "other" column.

Activity 4

Chart your words according to long vowel sounds.

Some words may belong in more than one column.

Activity 5

Clap out the beats or syllables for your words and tell how many syllables each has.

Example:  snowman = 2 syllables

Activity 6

Divide your words into syllables.

Example:  snowman= snow / man

Activity 7

Make rhyming words for as many of your spelling words as possible.  Some words may not have another word which rhymes with it.

Example:  near - hear

                shoe - true

Activity 8

Write a synonym for as many words on your list as possible.

You may not be able to find a synonym for every word.

Try using a thesaurus.

Example: little - small

                 mad- angry

Activity 9

Write an antonym (opposite) for as many of your spelling words as is possible. 

There may not be an antonym for all of your words.

Example:  big- little

                     hard - soft

Activity 10

Write a "Who am I?" riddle for each of your words.

Example:  Riddle - I am a word which is the opposite of dull.

Answer:  sharp

Activity 11

Choose at least 8 of your words and show the meaning of the word by writing it several times into a shape.

Activity 12

Plural means more than one.

Make as many of the words from your list into plurals.

Use a dictionary if you're not sure how to spell the plural form.

Example:  chair-chairs
                       leaf - leaves

Activity 13 

Look for root words and endings in your list.

Make your own chart of the original word, root word, and prefix and/or suffix.

Activity 14

Look up each word in the dictionary and write its meaning.

Example:  camel - an animal that lives in the desert.

Activity 15

Look up each word in the dictionary and copy an example sentence.

Hint: It's usually in italics

Look up each word in the dictionary and write how it is pronounced.

Example:  crystal - 'kris-t&l
 

Activity 17

Look up each word in the dictionary and write its part of speech such as noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, et.

Example:  door - noun
                  sleep - verb
                          and- conjunction

Activity 18

Write 5 sentences using as many of your words from your list as possible.

Your sentence must make sense.

Activity 19

Write a short story using all of the words from your list.

Activity 20

Look at the words in your list.

Write one complete sentence telling about the pattern you see.

Use the letters in each of the spelling words to create a new word.

Create one new word for each spelling word.

Example:  primary - pair

Activity 22

Create an acrostic poem for at least 5 of your words

Activity 23

Make a new list of 10 words that follow the same spelling rules as your original list. 

Use dictionaries and textbooks to help you find new words.

Activity 23

Use Puzzlemaker to create a crossword puzzle of your spelling words.

Copy and paste the puzzle into word and save in your folder before requesting it to be printed.

Activity 24

EXTRA! EXTRA!  Read all about it!!

You are a reporter.  Write a newspaper article about a topic of interest to you.  Remember the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, and how.  Try to use all of your spelling words.  You can use Publisher or Word, or you can write it by hand.

Activity 25

Creative Cartoon –

Create a cartoon comic strip using your spelling words.  Use paper or PowerPoint slides to do this.

 

Activity 26

Tongue Twisters –

Write five alliterative sentences using your spelling words.  Try to make each word begin with the same letter to create a tongue twister.  Even though they may be silly, the sentences need to make sense.  See your spelling book for examples.

 

Activity 27

Using Power Point, create an interactive quiz that other students can take to study for the test.  You must use all 20 spelling words.

Activity 28

Pretend you are an explorer, traveling on a ship across the Atlantic Ocean.  Write a letter to a friend back in Europe, telling them of your journey and what you’ve discovered.  Try to use all of your spelling words, and don’t forget to use correct letter format!  You may use Word.
