  2. Read Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto.
  3. Discuss Causes and Effects (think of effects first and then that helps us figure the cause).
  4. Discuss chart briefly.
  5. Have students think about the causes and effects of their independent book and record at least one example in their reading journal.

a.      Connection – Now that we have published our first writing piece and noticed that there are areas of our writing that we can improve, let’s look again at how we can take a basic sentence and make a detailed sentence.

b.      Teaching Point – What are bare-bones sentences?  How can we make it a detailed sentence?

c.      Demonstration – Discuss including the how, why, when, and where of a sentence.

a.      Practice turning bare-bones sentences into a expanded (detailed) sentence.

Objective: Students will learn that writers can bring out more of their stories by writing whole paragraphs from single key sentences.

Activities:

1.    Mini-Lesson:

a.      Connection – Remind students about yesterday’s writing on elaborating on a sentence.   

b.      Teaching Point – Tell students that we are going to practice the same thing again today.

c.      Demonstration – Show example of sentence on chart paper and how it was elaborated into a paragraph from yesterday.

2.    Conference/Small Group/Independent Work Time:

a.      Have them complete the types of sentences activity when finished.  They should write their answers on a piece of notebook paper.  At the end of writing collect their work. 

b.      When finished with the types of sentences work, have the students practice writing a different sentence and then below writing a paragraph elaborating on their idea. 

3.    Debrief/Share

a.    If you have time let students share their piece with their partner for the last few minutes of writing.

c.      Demonstration – Discuss what quotation marks are.

2.    Conference/Small Group/Independent Work Time:

d.      Students should freewrite and see if they can use quotation marks in their stories.  Have them remember what the punctuation rules are.

a.    Have students partner share for the last 2-3 minutes.
