5.    Independent Practice-Square part activity.  Make the various shapes and draw the shapes on the smaller drawings.

b.      Teaching Point- What are past tense verbs? How do we use these or find these in sentences? What is an example of a past tense verb?

c.      Demonstration- Discuss Past tense verbs-Online lesson.

  3. Model creating an outline of Discovering the Titanic.
  4. Read Chapter 1 and model writing a sentence to include in summary.
  5. Divide students into groups to read and write a subtopic sentence for their assigned chapter.

Objective:  Students will develop an understanding of sliding, flipping and turning polygons.

Activities:         

1.      Mental Math

2.      Lesson-Discuss how objects (shapes) can slide, flip or turn to make another shape. Students will take notes and learn on-line the three different transformations by drawing a picture and giving the definition. I will demonstrate on the SMARTNotebook how these shapes can be changed.

4.      Activity- Square part activity. Students will make shapes to fit into larger shapes

b)     Teaching Point- Give me some examples of verbs we have covered in class and what tense they are in.

c)      Demonstration- List 3 sentences on the board and have students assist me in choosing the appropriate verb tense. I will then discuss with students how to fill out verb chart. I will have first row completed and then we will complete second row as a class.

2.)Conferences/Small Group/Independent Work Time:

a)                        Students will complete verb tense sheet and turn into box.

b)     Students will go online with partners and practice using all three verb tenses.

Procedure:        

Mini-lesson 1:05-1:25         

1.      Review with students the pre-reading organizer we filled out as a class. Discuss with students the importance of using non-fiction text features to help you make predictions about the text. Inform students that they will be completing their own prediction organizer and read the story Stopping a Toppling Tower.   Have students answer if their predictions were right and if the text features helped them

2.      Have students read story and answer questions in their reading journals

 Objective: Students will re-examine what prepositions are and practice locating them in a sentence.

Activities:

1.)Mini Lesson:

a.      Connection-What do we call words like in, out, on top, above etc.?

c.      Demonstration-  Briefly discuss what prepositions are and how they are used in sentences. Go over first sentence on sheet together. Have students complete the rest of sheet.

1.      Ask students how we pick out important features from nonfiction texts.  What do we use to organize our thoughts?

2.      Introduce and show them that outlines can be helpful when writing about a nonfiction text.

3.      Read about the duck billed dinosaur and fill in the outline on SMARTNotebook.

4.      Have students create an outline from their independent nonfiction book they picked up from the library in reading journals.
