a.      Connection – Who is your favorite athlete, author, or actor/actress?  Have you ever wondered more about those individuals?

b.      Teaching Point – What is a biography?

c.      Demonstration – Read an example biography from article of Frederick Douglas.  Compile a list of key points that a biography contains.

a.      Divide class into 2 groups and interview Miss K and Mrs. B.

  3. Model creating an outline of Discovering the Titanic.
  4. Read Chapter 1 and model writing a sentence to include in summary.
  5. Divide students into groups to read and write a subtopic sentence for their assigned chapter.

Objective: Students will write two paragraphs explaining the problem and solution using complete sentences using their independent books.

Procedure:      

Mini-lesson 1:15-1:25         

1. Briefly review with student’s problem and solution using several previous books as examples. Discuss with students the problems the characters may have faced. Review the problem and solution chart for the book Hatchet. Review with students how we can take the information from the chart to complete paragraphs. Demonstrate a brief paragraph with students using the chart. Have students complete their own paragraphs from the charts in their journals.

c.      Demonstration – As a class answer key questions from article on Frederick Douglas. Explain that they will be a researcher and finding information for a biography.

a.      Students will choose their individual to research for their biography writing piece.
