a.                    Connection – You’ve learned so many things about descriptive writing and should have several pieces of writing by now.

b.                    Teaching Point – Select a piece of writing from snippet journals to publish. Read out loud to partner and have partner check for mistakes or have partner give suggestions on things that could be improved

c.                    Demonstration – Discuss steps of prewriting, rough draft and then First revision. Ensure that students understand that each step is a process and you have to do one before the other.

Mini-lesson 1:15-1:25         

  1. Discuss with students the Read-A-Loud Hatchet . Fill out the first portion of the problem/solution part, focusing only on the many problems Brian has faced in Hatchet. Then, students will assist me in filling out the effects portion of this chart focusing on how the problems listed in the first column has caused him.
  2. Students will then complete their own chart in their reading journals identifying the problems and effects from their independent books.

  1. Lesson – Watch short video of diving scores.  Have example of a line plot and find the mean, median, and outlier for the data.  SMARTBoard

  1. Activity – Students then create their own sample data and line plot with data set questions with a partner.  Switch with another group and then share.

c.      Demonstration – Discuss steps of editing and what should you see when you are editing. Review punctuation rules and spelling. Inform students they may also look in the writers handbook if they have any questions or concerns.

Objective: Students will complete a Problem/Solution and Events Flow chart identifying the Solution and Effects from the book  A Bad Case of Stripes.

Activities:          

Mini-lesson 1:15-1:25         

  1. Briefy discuss the problem/solution chart completed on the book Hatchet. Review the importance of identifying the problems and solutions and making sure they correlate with one another.
  2. Discuss one problem/solution and event with the class to demonstrate how the flow chart works with A Bad Case of Stripes.
  3. Have students complete the rest of the chart independently. Have students cut and paste chart into their reading journals.

2.      Inform the students that we will be creating a plot paragraph for problem/solution using the book Hurricane. Model for the students how to use sequence of events and problem/solution and create a paragraph from the information.

3.      Have students create their own plot paragraph from the read-a-loud Abduction.

Communication Arts – Reading Workshop

Objective: Students will create their problem/solution story using a single picture.

Activities:          

Mini-lesson 12:10-12:25    

  1. Briefly review with student’s problem and solution using several previous books as examples. Discuss with students the problems the characters encountered and how those problems were resolved.
  2. Inform students they will now be able to be their own author and create their own story using a single picture.
  3. Demonstrate this concept to the students by showing a single picture to the class and have the whole class participate in creating a story line from the picture.
  4. Have students then go back to their seats and create their own individual story from different cards passed out in class.
