Objective: Students will develop knowledge of using a line plot to find features of a data set.

Activities:                           

1.      Watch short video of diving scores.

2.      Have example of a line plot and find the mean, median, and mode for the data.  SMARTBoard

3.      Students then create their own sample data and line plot with data set questions with a partner.

4.      Switch with another group and then share.

5.      What is a prime number?

Writing

Objective: Students will learn that one way writers make writing powerful is by following Narrative writing we admire.

Activities:

1.    Mini-Lesson:

a.      Connection – When writers publish things, they admire their work and others admire their work.   

b.      Teaching Point – To improve your writing, you can follow what published authors do.  This is a strategy to make our writing more powerful.

c.      Demonstration – Discuss how we follow a piece of writing (p. 3 of Lucy Calkins Book 2).

2.    Conference/Small Group/Independent Work Time:

d.      Students will listen and read “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros.  What do you notice about this story?  What are the main things that Sandra Cisneros has done that I need to keep in mind if I’m going to write like this?

  1. Mini-Lesson:

a.      Connection – What did you like about yesterday’s piece “Eleven.”   

b.      Teaching Point – When looking at other author’s writing, we first picture in our minds like readers what is taking place.  Then, we analyze what the author has done.

c.      Demonstration – Discuss how we analyze a piece of writing (p. 7 of Lucy Calkins Book 2).

Objective: Students will learn that one way writers make writing powerful is by following Narrative writing we admire.

  1. Mini-Lesson:

a.      Connection – Comparing various writings is interesting.   

b.      Teaching Point – When looking at other author’s writing, we see many differences.

c.      Demonstration – As we have been doing with the copy of “Eleven,” we are going to compare more writing pieces.

  1. Conference/Small Group/Independent Work Time:

a.      In partners, students will discuss what they notice about the various pieces and then as a class compare and contrast them.

a.      Connection – Writers think of first times, last times, or times of important realizations to generate writing.

b.      Teaching Point – When writers want to generate ideas, they think of turning point moments.

c.      Demonstration – List first time, last times, or times when I realized something important.  I pick something I have done: like riding a bike, seeing the ocean, or even a moment (this one is harder – graduating high school).

a.      In your journals, generate your own ideas.  See questions to ask to find turning points (SMARTBoard).
