Activities:      

1.      Discuss rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000 using a number line.

2.      Introduce Rounding Rap.

3.      Whole group – Complete #1, 2, 7, 8, 9 on Rounding Numbers Practice 1-3 together.

4.      Partner/Independently – Complete Rounding Numbers Practice 1-3.

b.      Teaching Point – We have discussed that personal narratives include people and places, but lets focus on an object to write about.

c.      Demonstration – Use an example like my QT cup.

  2. Whole Group – Make a brief map grid of my living room using Microsoft Excel and come up with a few questions correlating with the grid.
  3. Partner – Make your own map grid of the classroom or playground and develop questions to correlate with your grid.
  4. The World Quiz
  5. Challenge:  Geography Quiz~  Use the map of your countries to help you!

Objective: Students will generate focused writing piece on one of the possibilities of a personal narrative.

Activities:

  1. Mini-Lesson:

a.      Connection – Celebrate that we are using strategies taught to us in order to write stories that matter.

b.      Teaching Point – We have discussed that personal narratives include people, places and objects.  Now, as good writers know they have to focus and be specific, or Zooming In and leaving out details that don’t matter.

c.      Demonstration – Use an example such as one time at the beach.

d.      Students practice thinking of an event and then Zooming In on a particular detail of that event in their snippet journals.

f.        Teaching Point – writing conferences have a reliable structure: questions (SMARTboard)

g.      Demonstration – Discuss an ex. Of teacher vs. child and contrast how they can be different

c.      Demonstration – I resist talking all about and instead storytell the event: Recall the Fire Drill and start as a whole class.
